AI Companions: Emerging Evidence, Open Questions, and Paths Toward Responsible Design

A multidisciplinary synthesis connecting companion design, potential benefits and harms, open research questions and shared responsibilities.

What it contributes

Companionship can emerge through how people use general-purpose chatbots as well as purpose-built products. The report connects technical features such as memory with human expectations and governance, while recording unresolved disagreements.

Read with care

This synthesises a November 2025 workshop and related literature; it is not a new controlled experiment or a systematic review. Recommendations and areas of agreement should be distinguished from empirical findings. The report cautions against transferring adult findings to young people.
